The Interest Free Student Loan Scheme (IFSLS) for higher education has been operational since 2017. This proposal draws attention to the key factors that impinge on the sustainability and effectiveness of the scheme and addresses the challenges that must be overcome.
At present, with the annual student enrolment exceeding 20,000, the non-state higher education (NSHE) sector makes a substantial contribution to meeting the demand for higher education in Sri Lanka. SLANSHEI recognizes the need to regulate NSHE in an equitable manner to support further expansion of the sector and to ensure that our youth receive a high-quality higher education. This proposal discusses the introduction of legislation for the recognition of private higher education, enabling the growth and improving quality and standards of the sector.
